The Electronic Cigarette! Friend or FOE!!?!? News at 11!

March 13th, 2009

Ok, it is time to write an article on this, because I am tired of the news articles I have been seeing lately.

The Electronic Cigarette! Friend or FOE!!?!?

If you do not know what an electronic cigarette is, feel free to search around, but in short it is an electronic device that takes nicotine liquid and vaporizes it for you to inhale. Like a cigarette but VERY different, you inhale vapor and not smoke. So there ya go the quick rundown. Feel free to check out a more indepth look here:

http://www.esmoking101.com/

http://www.esmoking101.com/?cat=10

Now what has got me bothered about the articles lately? It is simple:

1. before you take your chances with the electronic cigarette, talk to your doctor and get started with a program that helps smokers kick the nasty habit. http://uweekly.com/newsmag/03-04-2009/10463

2. “There is not sufficient evidence that (they) are safe products for human consumption,” Timothy O’Leary, a communications officer at the WHO’s Tobacco Free Initiative in Geneva, said this week. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090227/ap_on_re_as/as_china_smokeless_smokes

3. The problem is the vapor you see has not been proven safe. http://cbs3.com/topstories/safe.cig.cigarette.2.925040.html

How about instead of making “good” news people will watch with the idea of “BAD” news, what if we rephrased all the above into:

1. Talk to your doctor about the possibility of switching to an electronic cigarette vs the regular cigarette to see how nicotine will effect your health, as it is not sure yet if they are better alternatives, but they just might be.

2. There is not sufficient evidence that these are BAD products for human consumption.

3. The vapor you see has not been proven to be bad.

Quite amazing what some rewording will do.

You have a few factions here:

The smoker, the ANTI smoker, the pacifist(speaks for itself), and the culture-ist.

THE SMOKER:

As a former smoker here is my take on it:

“I just wanted to write about some of the conversations I have had with people about e-cigarettes in the last few days. As any e-smoker knows, when you go on your smoke breaks with one of these things you get asked a lot of questions.

I have had some of the most down to earth sincere conversations with people over the last few days about smoking. It has really been moving. What a smoker will never admit to a non smoker or someone who says,”HEY you need to QUIT!” or “You know you’re killing yourself, right?!?!” is why yes yes I am. We get pissed and it makes us want to smoke more because deep down inside we know exactly what we are doing. We are also dreading the doctor visits for simple checkups because of the WHAT IF and CANCER word, causing some to miss normal checkups all together. All in all it is denial, but most of all it is us loving the aspect of smoking soo much: being social, our mind giving us a break from work, brain storming, some cases weight loss, and so on. How many times have you been a part of an important meeting ona  smoke break? I know I have.  There are things like that in life that make quitting even harder, especially if you enjoy it. What we feel inside is so conflicting it is impossible to answer those who approach us in any other way than for us to joke as a dismissal or to get angry.

This is where my conversations have differed. When anyone sees that there is another option out there to keep their lifestyle they have grown to love, be it feeding the nicotine addiction or just having the social aspect, if you ask them, “You hate the fact that regular cigarettes are eventually going to kill you” They will look you in the eyes and agree. Not only that but there is such truth in the statement and understanding, it is really moving. I have been very fervent about the entire idea of e-smoking because honestly I have wondered SINCE I BEGAN SMOKING, why oh why can’t there be a healthy alternative, I really enjoy this. I mean come on, smoking is a past time that really just feels right for some of us. I mean look at an old 50’s picture, everyone is smoking. Look at the old ads! They didn’t know any better and so they enjoyed smoking and it was part of the culture. When we found out it was bad it was too late to turn back and the culture pushed on, even past all of the negative aspects. People look down on smokers because they are killing themselves, HOW COULD THEY! They say we smell, they say it sucks to kiss us, they move us into corners of buildings away from other people even though they don’t realize we have our own community wherever they put us. We often feel exiled or as if we may jeopardize more than our health but our jobs as well being smokers.

So now that I can tell my story with the e-cigarettes to all my friends who smoke with me, they look at what is in my hand, confused but hopeful. And I swear if there was theme music or I could jump into the inner psychie of one of them when they hear there is a healthier alternative to smoking without having to stop the routine I would start crying. Or how about the idea that you could technically smoke indoors so if you NEED to be somewhere but can’t concentrate without that smoke, do it right there, take a few drags, or hit the bathroom and grab a few puffs in there to last you.

Now don’t get me wrong being that e-cigs are still under question this may not be the answer yet, but just from a surface point of view it is a damn good step in the right direction.”

Every smoker wonders why they can’t make a healthy cigarette. But will they always admit it to the Anti smoker? No.. which leads to:

The Anti smoker:

The anti smoker could care less about the habits of smokers or if there could be lives saved with a safer alternative. They think, why not just quit!?! Because sometimes just quitting isn’t that easy. For example, you are overweight, which is obviously not healthy, why not JUST EXCERSISE, simple analogy, but one that is often overlooked. For a smoker there is more to a cigarette than just the nicotine. The Anti smoker often takes the “faith” approach via mass media vs thinking of a way to compromise and satiate everyone’s needs.

They prefer to say, it is a “Nasty Habit”. Well, it is funny because before the harm was known it was considered a very social habit and actually a status symbol. So if there is now a possible chance for a “healthier” alternative (I use that word lucratively) why is it any different than back then?

Which leads me to :

The Culture-ist:

These are the people that remember when smoking was a social status, a symbol of an era of people. Why do so many movies have people smoking? Because it was natural back then, a part of everyday life. So unfortunately quitting goes much farther than just crumpling the pack, slapping on a patch, and moving on with life. This has been in our culture for centuries. So why is it so hard to try to accept the idea that technology is allowing us to have that pastime, that pastime we all enjoyed in the 50’s 60’s etc, but possibly without the really bad side effects?

I understand why a cigarette itself is considered bad these days, because it has been PROVEN to be bad, but now there is coming a time where it may not be anymore, so why not put MORE effort into getting it to the point of “healthy” and letting people enjoy it? It is like a fine wine to some people. It is just something to do, you don’t need to drink wine, but you can if want, and with the right distilling(or in this case technology advances) it can be quite enjoyable!

I will give CNN some credit, they made a very unbias’d article.

It seems some celebrity exposure with e-cigarettes is causing a change in how they are portrayed in the news, which is good:

http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/03/13/ecigarettes.smoking/index.html

“The idea that that e-cigs may be a good tobacco smoke alternative in the future could hold true, the FDA and WHO acknowledged, but proof of the product’s safety must come first.”

Well done CNN.

I hope this has given you an idea of the E-Cigarette in a different light. Because honestly, if it is healthy not healthy whatever, it is a great step in the right direction for cigarettes in general!

And need some test results, well here ya go(nothing long term yet though unfortunately):

West Coast Meet and Vape - Are you interested?

February 16th, 2009

Hey everyone!

I am thinking of hosting a west coast get together, where we all meet up and Vape it up!

I will be offering raffles, gifts, etc of various E-Smoking items.

Plus it will be a great way just to meet the people we all talk to.

Smoking is a very social event, so why not combine it with the people who understand what e-smoking is all about.

It could be a great place for consumers to show off their favorite e-smokes, new users to learn about different brands, and even a place to show off inventions!

Think of all the new flavored e-liquids you could TRY in PERSON! Instead of asking on the forums!

As well this could be great for suppliers to come out and show off their products. Raise some buzz.

I figure if we have the right turn out, I know some hookups that would allow us to rent a bar or lounge and vape the night away!

If you are interested please respond with your location and times you are available, such as weekends, weeknights, etc.

This would be in the Orange County/LA area.

As of now the date is tentative and I will form a time and place depending on schedules and interest.

I started a forum poll here: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/general-e-smoking-discussion/6691-west-coast-vape-off.html
Feel free to use the comments here or there to chat!

IMPORTANT THINGS/LINGO TO KNOW BEFORE READING

    1. A cartridge (holds the nicotine or juice/liquid)
    2. An Atomizer (heats up the liquid to produce the vapor)
    3. A battery (usually the longer part of the e-cigarette to make the atomizer heat up)
    4. LED (lights up when you inhale, usually blue or red, but comes in other colors such as pink)

    Types of E-Cigarettes

s

s

    1. Vape, Vaping - This is the use of an e-cigarette. To take a drag or inhale the vaporized liquid.
    2. Vapor - The vapor emitted from the e-cigarette when inhaled. This would be “smoke” for a regular cigarette.
    3. E-Juice - The Liqiud Nicotine used to refill your e-cigarette cartridge.
    4. Throat Hit - This is often said for the tingling sensation at the back of your throat when you inhale an e-ciagrette. This would be overlooked with a normal cigarette because it is normal for every brand, but with different brands of e-cigarettes this experience will differ.
    5. Pull - The act of sucking on the mouthpiece of pull the vapor into your mouth.
    6. Fogger - Another name for the E-Cigarette.
    7. Analog - A cute name for traditional cigarettes like marlboro.
  1. Terms used by E-smokers

This will hopefully give you a good vernacular for E-cigarettes as we continue with this guide. Feel free to refer to anything above or ask questions if the things below still do not make sense to you.

WHAT DO I NEED TO START?

After reading up on the idea of an E-cigarette and what it was, I was very interested in buying one. But how do you buy an E-cigarette and make sure you have the right things to replace your current cigarette addiction!? Any smoker will tell you, a day without cigarettes is a very difficult day indeed.

When I switched I was on the patch, so I definately didn’t want to be put in the situation where I would have to buy a pack of cigarettes if my supplies ran out or I had a hardware malfunction. I enjoyed smelling again!

Most sites offer “Starter Kits”.

    1. 2 x Batteries
      2 x Atomizers
      1 x charger and plug
      5 x cartridges

  1. A Starter Kit usually consists of:

This is a great place to start, especially if you want to give one to a friend or split the price. Essentially you are getting two e-cigarettes in a kit with two batterys and 2 atomizers. Remember though, as with all electronics, there is a failure rate, so I recommend keeping both for yourself incase something breaks. This way you are never in a situation where you have to buy regular cigarettes because your e-cigarette is broken.

Here is an example image from Janty’s Dura Starter Kit:

jantydura

This is enough to get you started for about 2 days of use.

Why?

This does not come with any E-Juice to refill your cartridges with. A prefilled cartridge will only last you about 6-7 cigarettes worth on a model like the one above. If you decide to get a smaller model like the “super mini” that is more of a cigarette look a like, you will get 2-3 cigarettes worth per prefilled cartridge. ***(Please refer to the “parts” section of this guide for the different models and how much liquid is in a cartridge)***

So what else do you need?

You should grab a 10 ml bottle of E-Juice. This is enough to refill a cartridge (depending on how heavy a smoker you are) for about 100-160 cigarettes worth! They usually retail for about 10$. Now imagine the money you are saving on costs per month with that!

So to summarize: With a starter kit and a bottle of E-Juice you will be good to go for about 1 and a half to 2 weeks respectively. Your batterys recharge and you have two of them, so when using one you have another on backup, if an atomizer dies you have two so you can replace it while you send in the other for repairs or you wait on a shipment of a new one, and you have liquid to refill your cartridges!

HOW MUCH SHOULD I SPEND?

The # 1 thing I noticed was price differences. Why were some sites 150$ and some 50$? The real reason is because some sites take advantage of those who have not seen anything other than word of mouth or a news broadcast about these things and think, hell 150$ must be a good price and it is “on sale!” The truth is these ALL come from China and are resold in the states. The Manufacturers usually sell these for 17-22 dollars per in bulk. I wouldn’t recommend buying from China though, with the FDA and customs snooping, this can be more trouble than a few extra bucks, and hey… that is how our economy works, the supplier gets a deal to give it to you.

But regardless don’t get fooled!

Anything above 80$ is usually a rip off.(but like any good buyer check your options, what the starter kits include and warranty options) You can usually get them shipped for below 80$ with some refills of E-Liquid to boot!

Expect to spend a little more money upfront than you will in the long run. You are paying for the original parts first, but after you own the e-cigarette you only need replacement parts and refills of the E-Liquid, keeping your prices down respectivly below 30$ a month! You save a lot of money compared to smoking traditional cigarettes!

***Some products are name brands and some are generic. Most people have found generic to be JUST AS GOOD if not the same as NAME BRANDS. So the price diff is up to you! ***

WHICH ONE DO I WANT?

If you are like me, an ex smoker, than you probably are looking at an e-cigarette that is as close to the real thing as possible, in looks and size. However keep this in mind:

The smaller it is the more you need to refill and charge the batteries. Since first trying e-ciagrettes I have changed over to a mini style e-cigarette over a super mini. I use the Janty Dura Model.

REFERENCE:

s

It is inbetween the Mini DSE901 size and the super mini NJOY NPRO style. That doesn’t bother me, plus it is lighter than the NJOY NPRO super mini. You realize as you go along that you don’t need it to look like a cigarette. I think my biggest worry was fitting in on smoke breaks and not looking weird… well you will still be asked questions about what it is regardless of size and color, so might as well have the one that lasts longer with better battery/cartridge life. Plus I find my Janty Dura to be lighter and feel better in my hand than the super mini NJOY NPRO. Many people on forums etc tell you ex smokers will have to get the one closest to a cigarette first and this is true, but we all switch.. lol we all switch.) I still have my super mini for special occasions when I want to blend more.

So if you still want the smaller, lookalike you have two viable options here! (keep this in mind, none of these are the same size as a cigarette and are all closer to a WIDE cigarette at a 100 length. Their weight is also variable).

I will now give youa break down of the Minis and Super Minis I would recommend!

1. Cigarette Look Alike: AKA THE SUPER MINI

    NPRO NJOY – npro.com

This E-Cigarette looks like a wide camel 100. It weighs about the same as a pair of scissors. (ya know the plastic handle ones that slide through wrapping paper really well) They call these mini foggers.

This cigarette while more expensive, BECAUSE of the site and maker, not because of quality, is covered by a 1 year warranty. This means if the atomizer or battery dies for whatever reason you can send it back for a replacement. This is nice for those who do not want to venture into buying spare parts and carrying them around with them. HOWEVER, if you HAVE to send it back you will be without a nicotine replacement for a few days, if this sounds ok to you than this is a great option. Another option if you bought from this manufacturer is to buy spare parts from PURESMOKER.com(NJOY doesn’t sell spare atomizers). The parts for his brand called the “Peewee” are the same as the NJOY NPRO. This sounds like a great time to talk about the PEEWEE.

    PEEWEE – puresmoker.com

This cigarette is the exact same model as the NPRO NJOY, without the warranty. So if you want to have the same product as above for 20 dollars cheaper, and buy replacement parts from the site etc, this is a great option for you.

    Specific Details for these Models:

The battery life with two batteries will last you a day if you were a pack a day smoker. You will just need to keep on charging while the other is in use. They do last about 3 hours with smoke breaks every 30 min.

The nicotine cartridges last for about 2-5 cigarettes at best from what I have seen. Most sites say they last more, but I am a pretty wussy smoker and do not pull hard and by the 4th or 5th cigarette equivalent I am not getting the hit I need off them and need to replace them. With smaller models like this the cartridge has less space for the liquid so they need to be refilled more often or replaced. If you are looking to replace the cartridges at a dollar a pop, you are looking at, with the above specs, 5 dollars per day for 20 cigarettes worth. This is almost the equivalent of buying regular cigarettes. So this is not the best monetarily.

The cartridges can be bought prefilled from PURESMOKER.COM for the peewee for both the NPRO NJOY and the PEEWEE.(DO NOT BUY FROM NPRO.com THEY OVERCHARGE, BY A SERIOUS AMOUNT) If the color is not to your liking(he only sells black right now) the cartridge itself has two parts, the plastic outside and the holder inside with the nicotine and cotton swab. You can easily push that out and put it in an orange one on your e-cigarette so not to mess up the appearance.

If you choose to refill your cartridge instead of replace them you may need some better tools, such as a 5 ml syringe to push the liquid into the smaller cartridge at the bottom. This may be problematic if you are in an office situation and pulling out a syringe may set off alarms. The positive is you can PREFILL a couple cartridges at home and bring them to work with you. (You can buy “ejuice/liquid”, aka nicotine liquid, from puresmoker.com and jantyusa.com. I will get into this further in the latter accessories section.)

Dripping is another method to refill your cigarette where you drop 2 drops of a nicotine liquid on your atomizer and smoke it, which last about one cigarettes worth. This option can be tricky and not recommended for the complete novice…

The great part about these smaller cigarettes is they are easy to carry around in your pocket and they do not draw as much attention in the smoker crowd, although personally I have yet to NOT be asked a million questions while smoking an e-cigarette in general. So if you do not mind spending a little extra if not the same as regular smoking money on cartridges, filling your cartridges yourself, or even dripping onto the atomizer, then this will work out well for you!

2. Mini (Janty Dura, DSE901, RN)

    • Heats Vapor more than a DSE901. This feels more like a real cigarette when inhaling. I find with DSE901’s you don’t know you have inhaled the vapor until you taste it or see it coming out of your mouth when you exhale due to it not being heated enough.
    • Well balanced in your hand
    • Comes with a portable charger that can replace the need for a case and pack of smokes in your pocket. Also keeps my battery charged all day
    • Easy to refill.
    • It does seem to have some problems with liquid dripping out easier than other models. Janty has said they are working on resolving this and have new cartridges being made.
    • Batterys seem to be iffy on holding a charge. Also something Janty is looking into.
  1. Janty Dura - Jantyusa.com

The Janty DURA is slightly smaller than the DSE901 height wise. However it holds about 8-12 Cigarettes worth easy with its larger cartridge. It also has a rounded mouth piece instead of a rectangular one. It only comes in black with a blue LED and a gold seal in the middle. It actually fits in the hand very nicely with a wonderful balance. The size difference doesn’t bother me as much as I thought it would after getting the super mini NJOY NPRO.

This fogger has often been referred to as the DSE901 competition. It has a new atomizer technology and cool addons, such as a battery powered portable charger.

I have to say this is my favorite so far, it is lighter than my super mini, and it looks smaller because of the black and design. I love the way the vapor comes out of this thing. It isn’t harsh and it heats it more than my super mini. I would have to say until further notice this is my main e-smoke.

    Things I love:

    Things I dislik:

UPDATED February 9th 2009: The Dura has been dropped in price to 58.95. I would pick this over ANY other e-cigarette on the market now at that price.

    RN/DSE901

The MOST popular called the DSE901. It is about the length of a highlighter. It has a great pull, very smooth vapor, and holds the equivalent of 7-10 cigarettes worth of nicotine liquid. The battery life is also about 5 hours of use, which is great!

You can also get this is black with a blue/red/pink/green LED. Or you can get it in white with an orange cartridge end and a red LED. So it is a bit longer but it will look like, FROM A DISTANCE, a real cigarette. The difference here is the mouthpiece is rectangular like an old 50’s style movie star cigarette.

This is usually the e-cigarette people get as a secondary or after they have decided that looking close to a real cigarette isn’t as important anymore, and want it to be less of a hassle and less upkeep.

These can be purchased from E-Smokeytreats.com or PURESMOKER.com. Puresmoker is cheaper but we offer a 10% discount if you use the coupon code “esmoke101″ for e-smokeytreats.com. The difference here is that E-smokeytreats offers 6 month warranty on all parts and 2 atomizers per starting kit. Puresmoker gives you a normal starter kit with a 14 day return policy. It is really up to you!

What is the difference between say a DSE901 and the RN version of the DSE901? The mouthpiece. The REAL DSE901’s have a thinner mouthpiece with a rectangular hole to pull the vapor from. It is actually really a great feeling versus the RN versions of the DSE901.

The thinner mouthpiece versions can be purchased from: VaporE-Cigs.com and a 5% discount code can be applied by typing in esmoking101.

We also have a review video of his E-Cigarette here:

WHERE TO BUY:

I did some research and narrowed down my searches to the following sites(or just check out our “Where to Buy” Tab above for a more indepth look into the different suppliers!:

  • JantyUSA.com – Very helpful customer service and large selection of flavored nicotine liquids. Great warranty options and return policies.
  • E-smokeytreats.com - Phil seems like a very pleasant person to buy from. He also seems to pride himself on quality and customer service mixing both a great return policy and some pretty competitive prices! One thing that stands out here is his dual battery dual ATOMIZER in his starter kits. This is a great idea! He does not sell the super mini cigarette look-a-likes. If you order off our site you get a 10% discount with the coupon code “esmoking101″ without quotes!
  • Vapore-cigs.com - Nathan is very helpful and definitely very quick to reply and answer any and all questions. He is very stern on his idea that his 901 is the actually DSE901 and not the RN model. Although sometimes a little overzealous about his products, they hold up to high standards. If you order off our site you get a 5% discount with the coupon code “esmoking101″ without quotes!

  • Puresmoker.com – Wonderful guy named Steve runs this and is very helpful with all your questions and needs .His prices are extremely competitive

  • NJOY.com – Great starter package for the person who wants to get a cigarette as close to real as possible, with helpful instructions, and overnight shipping options. As well a 30 day return policy and 1 year warranty option.

These are in order from cheapest prices to most expensive.

Ok so now you know where to buy them!

UPKEEP and ACCESSORIES

As you can see the e-cigarettes are a little complex to start out. They require refills, part replacement, and maintenance. However if you think of the time you spend going to the store for smokes or activities related, you spend about the same amount of time with either. The difference is you need to learn how to do it all unlike a cigarette and a lighter. So read over this document and I think you will be good to go. It is really quite simple. Liquid, Battery, Cartridge, Atomizer, Charger, and you are good to go.

LIQUIDS

E-Cigarette liquids are composed of:

Propylene glycol

“PG or propylene glycol is an organic compound (a diol alcohol), usually a faintly sweet, odorless, and colorless clear viscous liquid that is hygroscopic and miscible with water and acetone. Propylene glycol is recognized as generally safe by the Food and Drug Administration. It is used in food coloring, and flavoring, as an additive to keep food, medicines and cosmetics moist, and in machines that simulate smoke. Propylene glycol functions to provide the vapor mist that looks like smoke and to suspend flavor”

Nicotine

“an alkaloid found in the nightshade family of plants (Solanaceae) which constitutes approximately 0.6-3.0% of dry weight of tobacco,[1][2] with biosynthesis taking place in the roots, and accumulating in the leaves. It functions as an antiherbivore chemical with particular specificity to insects; therefore nicotine was widely used as an insecticide in the past, and currently nicotine analogs such as imidacloprid continue to be widely used.”

OTHER

Unfortunately there is still not too much information on all the ingredients used in the juices from all the companies. So this one is still a little shady.”

How do I know my MG count of Nicotine?

This is a very common question, especially for smokers who want to replace their intake of nicotine with these. I smoked a pack a day and find that 11-16 mg (usually the medium or high amount on websites) works great! For people who smoke half a pack a day I would suggest 6-11 mgs max. For people who occasionally smoke you may want 0 mgs or the lower 6mg content. If these do not work you can always go higher, but I suggest starting lower and moving to a higher dose if need be, that way you don’t become even more addicted to it. You can ALWAYS smoker for longer…

Another way to gauge is look at the nicotine patch doses. Nicotine patches come in several dosages, for example, 21, 14, and 7 mg, so that users can phase out nicotine use. A cigarette delivers roughly 1 mg of nicotine, so someone who used to smoke a pack (20 cigarettes) per day or more could start with the “Step I” 21 mg patch, while someone who smoked less could start with “Step II”. I was on the patch for ahwile after being a pack a day smoker and step 1 MESSED ME UP, I had to start on step 2 and I was fine, even then I was jittery.

REFILLING:

Are you nervous about buying liquid nicotine? Think perhaps the ones that are prefilled are better because you may over fill your own and possibly give yourself nicotine poisoning? Think again!

Refilling is about the easiest of the easiest parts of an e-cigarette. Sure it is a routine and something you will need to do if you choose this path, but it is the same as scrounging for change or looking for the lighter for your regular cigarette. It probably takes less time too. Not to mention the money saved.

You have two options, you can buy empty cartridges for your e-cigarette and fill them with a Liquid of your choice or you can use your prefilled cartridges and top them off when needed. Either way you need the Liquid. Some people like to buy syringes to break up the cotton like swab a bit to hold more liquid and fill it from the bottom up. This is not a bad method but you do not need to do this if you just drip the liquid into the cotton until it doesn’t seem like it is absorbing anymore. Worst case scenarios is if you fill it too much it will drip a little and can get in your mouth for the first few pulls, but nothing fatal.

There are a bunch of youtube videos that will show you how to refill using a syringe and just using the bottle itself if you still have questions.

Where to buy:

The best place I have found for liquids is JantyUSA.com they have a very wide selection of flavors and helpful descriptions. They also come in nice dropper bottles that you can use to fill the cartridges without the need for a syringe.

I have also heard that johnsoncreeksmokejuice.com is a good place for liquids and they have all the materials you would need, such as liquid, syringes, and tweezers. I have not tried it yet so I cannot speak first hand but something to note is their liquid comes in two types, one WITH the polyglycol and one without. So if that chemical doesn’t float your boat there is an alternative. Also just keep in mind some people find their liquids to be a little thinner.

Puresmoker.com has released some fun new flavors such as coca cola which apparently seem to be hitting it off really well with e-smokers!

CARTRIDGES

These are the holders for the liquid nicotine. On smaller models they are usually the mouthpiece as well, which is nice because it can be replaced easily. Some sites such as puresmoker.com sell these for about 75cents each and depending on the e-cigarette you buy can last from 5 cigarettes to a pack and a half.

These can also be bought without liquid in them and refilled manually and re-used.

You can also clean these by pulling out the cotton, rinsing, and then drying.

The internal of a cartridge is made of Polyester Batting! This means you can go to a fabric store or local walmart and pick up a roll of it for about 7$’s for a 5 foot roll. This could last you a year! (It is the exact same thing as the cores in what you buy, 100% polyester batting, there is no difference, it is the same stuff by all accounts. You just cut a piece and stick it in your cartridge and there is no need to ever buy blanks.)

BATTERIES

Pretty self explanatory. Battery life differs depending on cigarette brand. The super minis usually last for about 3 hours use and the larger the e-cigarette usually the longer the battery. These batteries do degrade over time so you will eventually have to replace them, some say they can be charged about 300 times before they are dead.

ATOMIZERS

This is the heart of the e-cigarette. This part heats up and converts the liquid into vaporizes nicotine. These can be cleaned and/or replaced. They have a tendency to degrade and die over time. So they will eventually have to be cleaned. Some side effects of a dirty atomizer or one that needs replacement is a burnt smell/taste when smoked with, less vapor being created, or not producing enough heat to make any vapor.

    HOW TO CLEAN:

Do not use boiling water, it can damage the atomizer.
The quick change in temperature of the different parts van give in some brands problems of fitting.
The chrome ring at the end of the tube can come lose with risk of broken wires and a dead atomizer.
For the cigarette models only clean the atomizer part in this way.
1 - Let the warm water flow in the atomizer an turn it upside down. repeat this several times.
2 - In the meanwhile fill a cup with the warm water and drop the atomizer in the cup. leave it there for half an hour
3 - then go to step 1 again. do this cycle 3 times.
4 - if it is OK the water stays clean with no smell.
5 - then shake the water out the atomizer en put the atomizer on a warm place to dry. (very gentle blow excess water out can help a little)
6 - only when you are really sure it is dry put some drops (6 -8) of Liquid in the atomizer.
You Must do this, before placing battery or trying to smoke!!! If you start smoking a really clean and dry atomizer, the heating wire inside will overheat and the atomizer will die! SO after putting the drops of Liquid on the atomizer wait for a few minutes for the atomizer mesh to soak the Liquid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uv11T8nwewU Now enjoy you’re NEW atomizer.

Remark: Every atomizer is filled with some Liquid before leaving the factory to prevent overheating a dry atomizer.

Remark 2: If You really want to clean a Cigar, Cigarillo or Pipe atomizer you can dot it in the same way, BUT in this atomizers is some electronics and a microchip. So for this types leaving it to dry before placing the battery is even more important.
Also always start these types with some drops of liquid, and wait a while before you start smoking.

If you do not have a bottle of Liquid, you can extract some from a cartridge. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVJ2XJp-EX4

CONCLUSION

E-Cigarettes are still not completely tested for safety but just looking at the way they work versus smoking, they seem like a hell of a better option if you were to continue smoking. They may also be a great way to quit, but that depends on you just as it would if you went on the patch or took medication. For me I wanted the social part back without the cancer. This provides that for the time being. The clinical results are still awaiting release; you can check http://www.e-cig.org/ for details. It is interesting to note the results will be from New Zealand and they just allowed the e-cig for use there. So maybe they know something we don’t J Hope this was helpful! Good luck!

Q. Does it feel/taste different than a real cigarette?

    A. The Smoke you inhale is vaper so it feels slightly different but the taste and sensation, especially using the Janty Dura, is very similar to smoke, as it is warm and fills your lungs the same. You can get special flavors as well to simulate your cigarette, but obviously it will never be 100% the same. Which is probably good!

Q. Why is it probably good!?!?!?!

    A. Well for a number of reasons. The vapor doesn’t taint your breath and your g/f or b/f will not be angry with you. It doesn’t ruing the taste of food or stop you from smelling the world!

Q. E-Cigarette and a Hookah, what do they have in common?

    A. This may seem to come out of left field, but I find the experience with an E-cigarette very similar to that of a Hookah. The flavor is more tastey than a cigarette. The feeling is less harsh than a cigarette due to it being a vapor. However, when you replace cigarettes with an E-Cigarette this is a welcome change, but could take some getting used to. You actually look forward to tasting your e-cigarette after a meal(coffee flavor?) rather than just having to!

Q. Hmm well do I still wake up with smoker phlegm?

    A. The simple answer is no. When you smoke with an e-cigarette you do not feel like a smoker when you wake up, and any smoker will tell you, it is not fun to have to take a shower to clear your throat in the morning.

Q. Do you pull the same as a regular cigarette?

    A. It seems from my experience so far, you do not pull the same, you take slightly longer drags, but it doesn’t bother me as much because it is not as HOT as a regular cigarette, which is why we take smaller drags to begin with. You will actually learn techniques as you smoke to fill your mouth or lungs(however you smoke) the way that fits you. I find as I pull it into my mouth, because of the flavored liquids and it being vapor and not smoke I can feel when my mouth is full and it is a pleasant sensation as it fills my mouth and transfer to my lungs and back out again. If anything the blow out is a little lacking due to it distilling through the process.

Q. How do I bring my E-Cigarette on a trip with me? Won’t the batteries run out?

    A. As with anything electronic the batteries may run out. However there are multiple charging apparatus available such as USB, WALL CONNECTOR, PORTABLE BATTERY POWERED(jantyusa.com), and CAR CHARGERS available.

Q. Do I need to have more than one e-cigarette?

    A. This really depends on you. As with all electronics, malfunctions can happen. Can you be ok for a few days waiting for replacement parts or warranties to be fulfilled? If not I suggest a second one, however you can also just carry replacement parts with you as well or have them on hand so you never find yourself in a bad state of withdrawal and the need to go back to regular cigarettes. Either you can look to the place you purchased your e-cigarette for backup parts or go to puresmoker.com and get them there.

Q. Ok, but what parts should I have extras of?

    A. You should have a backup atomizer, battery, and charger. If any of these die you would be SOL. Some things to consider is having extra e-cigarette nicotine liquid with you or cartridges as well to last until your next shipment can arrive.

Q. Does the liquid drip out of the e-cigarette?

    A. Every now and again, especially if you refill yourself, your e-liquid may drip into your mouth through the pull hole. This is very rare however and not fatal. What is important to note though, is the cartridge on e-cigarettes is not completely sealed, at least on minifoggers and the DSE901 or DURA series. What this means is when you are putting the cartridge on liquid sometimes drips out of the seal onto your fingers. This isn’t really a deal breaker but it can be annoying if you don’t want your fingers to smell. Sometimes the liquid can be sticky too, so it is best to wipe it down after refilling or changing cartridges. But even then some liquid can come out. This may be a surprise for smokers when they make the switch. Not a big deal though, you can still have it in your pocket without worrying about wet pants.

Q. Is there any reason why you would get the liquid in your mouth?

    A. Some people who switch from smoking to e-cigarettes are used to pulling really hard on them. When you change make sure to take softer longer pulls on your e-cigarette. It will produce better vapor and you will not get liquid in your mouth.

Q. What does it mean to have 2 or 4 air holes?

    A. All the e-cigarettes have holes that allow you to suck air through them, some have 4 and some have 2 and some have 1. This can make an easier pull and put less strain on the atomizer. It can also decrease amount of vapor depending on brand.

Q. How do I know when I am done smoking? It doesn’t burn down so…

    A. Well this is an interesting one, first if you smoke real cigarettes you know you sometimes toss a half done smoke cause your body says ok, I’m done. Same with these!(except the throwing part) Your body is pretty smart and will know when you have had your “fix”. I find standing next to a smoker and gauging it off them helps as well, some e-cigarettes have a built in LED to tell you if you smoked more than 12 times in a minute. So you have some checksums. While not the best method and this could probably be improved, your body definitely knows and you start to get used to how much you need to smoke to be well off. You may get a little bit of a head rush in the beginning.

Q. Big or small?

    A. I think it is nice to have both for different situations, but honestly it depends on if you want more upkeep or less. Larger requires less time refilling or replacing cartridges and charging batteries. And even though you think they are larger it doesn’t feel large in your hand and not even close to a PEN if you stick with the cigarette style ones.

Q. Can I just buy the e-cigarette and some cartridges and be done with it?

Q. Are there different flavors?

    A. Yes. You can check out sites like Jantyusa.com and Johnsoncreeksmokejuice.com for flavors like chocolate, menthol, Marlboro, etc.

Q. Can I smoke this in places normally marked for non-smoking?

    A. Because this only emits a vapor without smell, you can technically smoke it anywhere, but it really depends on those around you. It would be smart to check with store owners or managers before smoking these in normally sanctioned non smoking areas.

Q. Do real smokers make fun of you when you bring this out to the smoking spots?

    A. Ha this was a huge concern of mine. When I brought it out I was expecting people to not accept it, instead I have referred about 10 people so far to sites where they can buy these. I actually got a bit of a head rush the first day from having to show how it worked so many times. And now people are used to me with it and even with my new Dura with blue LED people are fine with it. It is actually the talk of the office at the moment. HENCE THE GIANT write up! J

Q. But now I have a zippo for no reason? Do I just whip it out of my pocket and smoke?

    A. Ok first off the zippo will still be good for when you need to light that special ladies smoke. And I’m grabbing this from “Disman” on the forum ecigforum.com I read about your smoke in the pocket:

I find that keeping the pieces apart is the best way. Not for technical reasons though. When regularly smoking, you have to open the box, grab a smoke, reach in your pocket and grab your lighter, light up, put the pack and lighter back.
With the components separated, you get some of that “habit” satisfied by having to assemble the e-cig before smoking.”

Q. What are some of the terms used by e-smokers?

    A. There are quite a few terms used by e-smokers. Vape: to use an e-cigarette. Analog: The name for original cigarettes like marlboro. E-Juice: Liqiud Nicotine refills. More soon!

Q. Will the cigarette look a-likes cause me any problems?

    A. Just be aware that the closer looking to a cigarette you have, the more you will be questioned, asked to stop, or discriminated against by places sanctioned no smoking, or just by people who despise smoking. So I would say use your best judgment when using the device. Just because WE know it is just vapor doesn’t mean the guy who WANTS to light up or the mom with kids knows.

Q. Where is a good place to find out more information about e-smoking?

    A. A great place is the community. There are lots of e-smokers out there like you and me and a few forums that facilitate it as well. I recommend: http://e-cigarette-forum.com (currently propagating a new DNS) and http://ecigforum.com. I was able to make a lot of my first decisions and learn a lot more tricks and tips this way. Be careful though it can CONSUME YOU!

I have been spouting about this e-cig since I first got my hands on one a month ago. It has very nicely heated vapor, great vapor production, is balance in your hand, is a great size, and looks cool! It was worth the price you paid, but it was hard to sell the idea to a new e-smoker though because of the price.

But with this price.. it is hard to buy anything else. I would say take advantage of this while you can!

Happy Shopping!

Where the hell do I put my E-Cigarette!

February 8th, 2009

So I had been using the tiny condom pocket in my jeans to hold my e-cigarette for the longest time.

At work I like to keep it in my pocket because I forget it at the desk if I go to smoke. At home I like it on my desk because I rarely go out into the cold to smoke anymore, however it would drip on my desk or roll off or just get lost.

Well… I THINK I have solved my problem for both situations, at home and at work!

Need Product Photos or Videos?

February 3rd, 2009

We have been getting an influx of emails asking if we do product photo’s for other websites/products.

Answer: Yes!

Send us an email at esmoking101 [@] gmail [dot] com with your needs or use the contact us form on the right side bar to contact us!

We will try to fit your site needs and styles. Obviously we at esmoking101.com have our own style we like to use, but we can accomdate anything you may need as well. Would be nice to see some websites and products getting the right exposure and proper feel, not the “off the truck” feel we often get from suppliers.

Secondly we will also do select video projects for people. We prefer to just do our reviews and random videos to help further the information for people at esmoking101.com but send us your idea and we will see if we can accomodate. And if you need a little brainstorming, we will be glad to throw our two cents in!

Once again thank you all for your inquiries, and we hope this clears things up a bit! We will be in touch soon!
